The "J & J" Collection of 12c 1851-57 Issues

Proofs, stamps and covers in single-owner sale
To be held September 27

Toppan, Carpenter & Co. was responsible for printing stamps from 1851 until the contract was awarded to National in 1861. The classic 12c Black, an elegantly engraved design with a portrait of George Washington, was one of the first three denominations issued in 1851 (the others were the 1c and 3c). Stamps were issued imperforate and perforated. Although a plate “3” was produced, there is no proof that more than two plates were actually used to print stamps (Plates 1 and 3; there is no evidence of Plate 2 stamps).

The specialized “J & J” Collection of 12c 1851-57’s will be offered in its own sale catalogue in September. The sale will feature essays, proofs, stamps, multiples and covers.
