Petersburg Va., 5c Red (65X1). Reconstruction of complete setting of ten, each position represented by a single with blue
Petersburg circular datestamp (one with integral "5cts" rate struck on stamp), outstanding quality, nine sound stamps including one Extremely Fine Gem (Position 1 with corner sheet margins), six Very Fine (Positions 2, 4, 5, 6, 8) and two Fine
(Positions 7, 10), only Position 3 has a tiny flaw (small thin spot in bottom margin)A REMARKABLY CHOICE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PETERSBURG POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL SETTING OF TEN. IT WOULD BE EXCEEDINGLY DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO ASSEMBLE ANOTHER RECONSTRUCTION OF THIS QUALITY. We should note that Position 1 is one of the finest used examples of the Petersburg provisional in existence and shows the nearly missing "e" of "Office" variety. Position 5 is also a corner sheet-margin copy and has an extraordinarily deep impression in brilliant red ink. There are three or four reconstructions extant, this is comparable to the ex-Birkinbine reconstruction in our Sale 795. Ex Moody. Scott Retail as ten singles. (Image Magnifier) |
