Georgetown S.C. Apr. 21 (1864). Circular datestamp and ms. "80" due rate applied as forwarding marks on label affixed to
daguerreotype case (front and back separated), addressed to a private in the 7th Georgia Cavalry at Georgetown with "Politeness of" route designation indicating first trip by hand, redirected to Columbia S.C. "Care Capt. Russell" and
sent by mail, pencil "Due", with original sixth-plate ambrotype in gold-leaf frame, portrait of a young stern-looking woman, original letter datelined "Tennille Geo., April 18th, 1864", explains decision to send by hand ("I think
much better than to send it by mail") and chastises Private Moore for not writing (rejoined splits in folds), pencil inscription on inside of case matches letterAN ORIGINAL AND REMARKABLE PIECE OF MAIL, COMPRISING THE AMBROTYPE, ORIGINAL LETTER AND CASE THAT SERVED AS A COVER WITH ADDRESS AND POSTAL MARKINGS. According to Brian Green, four of these daguerreotype cases sent thru the Confederate mails were discovered several years ago. At the end of the war they were found by a Union soldier in the Dead Letter section of the Richmond post office.
