Adams Express Company, Great Eastern, Western & Southern Express Forwarders, New-York. Large blue oval handstamp on backflap of U.S.
3c Red Star Die entire (U26) to Lynchburg Va., blue "Adams Express Co. Nashville Jul. 11(?)" and black "Adams Express Company, Knoxville Tenn. Jul. 12" oval datestamps, ms. "2/-" (two bits, or 25c) express charge, ms. "15", bottom flap
opened to show New York marking, top flap replaced, some slight wear, vertical file fold affects embossed stampVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF ADAMS EXPRESS OFFICE MARKINGS -- NEW YORK TO NASHVILLE TO KNOXVILLE -- FOR THRU-THE-LINES EXPRESS SERVICE TO LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA. Only a few covers are recorded with this combination of Adams office markings, which were applied in transit entirely outside the U.S. and Confederate postal systems. Adams also had the option of placing letters into the Nashville post office for delivery by regular Confederate mails. The Adams Knoxville oval is extremely rare, and collectors should be aware that a number of clever fakes were handled by John A. Fox, some of which have never been properly identified (these fakes bear the David Cleage address, a known correspondence). Perhaps the rarity of the Knoxville oval is appreciated less because of the circulating fakes. Ex Knapp, Solomon and Gallagher. (Image Magnifier) |

Melbourne (Victoria) to Petersburg Va. via London and New York. Folded letter datelined "Melbourne 23d July 1861" to Watson
McGill & Co. in Petersburg Va., in care of James Hunter & Co. in New York, Victoria 1860 2p, 6, and 1sh tied by bold grids, red "Melbourne JY 25 61" backstamp, red "London Paid AG SP 16 61" transit datestamp and "16 cents" credit handstamp,
ms. "8" credit, "N.York Am. Pkt. 5 Oct. 3" debit datestamp, receipt docketing "1861, R. W. Towns & Co., Melbourne 23rd July, Recd 10th Oct., Answd 12th Octo from Montreal", file fold thru stamps and center of cover partly obscuring
"Petersburgh", otherwise Fine, an unusual usage, the New York forwarder (Hunter) may have enclosed this in another envelope and sent it by a flag-of-truce route to Petersburg, the "Montreal" in docketing suggests another possibility that the letter
was sent there instead, an intriguing cover worth further research (Image Magnifier) |
