1c Blue, Ty. II (20). Mint
N.H., from the top row of Plate 2, deep rich color on bright
paper, unusually choice centering clearly showing the type
characteristicsEXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE II FROM PLATE 2. THIS IS THE SECOND MINT NEVER-HINGED COPY OF SCOTT 20 WE HAVE OFFERED IN FOURTEEN YEARS AND THE ONLY ONE FROM PLATE 2. A GREAT CONDITION RARITY. When perforations were introduced in 1857, the plates used to print stamps at Toppan, Carpenter & Co. were laid out with narrow spaces between the subjects, because no thought had been given to the concept of perforation holes between the stamps. The imperforate sheets of 1c stamps on hand were printed from Plates 1 Late, 2 and 4, and the perforations on those stamps rarely clear the design all around. The example from Plate 2 offered here is not only extremely rare as a Mint Never-Hinged copy, it is also exceptionally well-centered. With 1990 and 2007 P.F. certificates, the former with selvage at top. Scott Retail as hinged. (Image Magnifier) |

1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (22).
Original gum, in our opinion and in the opinion of the P.F. experts in
1990, the gum is in pristine Mint N.H. state (however, in 2007 the P.F. has
reversed itself), deep rich Plate 4 color on bright white paper, design
clear on all sides, showing wide break at top and complete line at
bottomEXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE TYPE IIIA RARELY SHOWS ALL OF THE DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TYPE -- THIS STAMP IS A TRUE CONDITION RARITY. The layout of Plate 4 still left little room for perforations. Most examples of Type IIIa are poorly centered, especially top-to-bottom. The example offered here, showing clear and unmistakable characteristics of the type, is a condition rarity. With 1990 and 2007 P.F. certificates (the former stating that "it is genuine", implying Mint N.H.) (Image Magnifier) |

3c Claret, Ty. I (25
var). Original gum, barest trace of what may be hinging, deep rich
color and proof-like impression, unusually choice centering for this
difficult issueEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 ISSUE IN THE CLARET SHADE. This stamp is extremely difficult to obtain in with such superior centering, due to the narrow spacing on the plate. With 2007 P.F. and P.S.E. certificates (both graded XF 90, SMQ $7,750.00). This is the only example to achieve this high grade, which is the highest awarded to date. (Image Magnifier) |

5c Brown, Ty. II (30A).
Original gum, in our opinion and in the opinion of the P.F. experts in 1991
the gum is Mint N.H. (however, in 2007 the P.F. has reversed itself and
described slight natural irregularities as "previously hinged"), deep rich
color and proof-like impression, almost perfectly centered with wide
margins all aroundEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 TYPE II 5-CENT BROWN. A BEAUTIFUL STAMP IN EVERY RESPECT. With 1991 and 2007 P.F. certificates, the former stating that "it is genuine" (implying Mint N.H.) (Image Magnifier) |

10c Green, Ty. III (33).
Original gum, barest trace of hinging, brilliant color, wide margins, full
perforations all aroundVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 10-CENT TYPE III. SCARCE IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION. The first perforated 10c stamps produced by Toppan Carpenter from sheets printed from Plate 1 are notorious among collectors for their poor centering. They are also very scarce in original-gum condition because, unlike 10c Plate 2 stamps (Scott 35), there were no supplies on hand in 1861 when the issue was demonetized due to the outbreak of the Civil War. Ex McKinney. With 1999 P.F. certificate (Image Magnifier) |

12c Black, Plate 3 (36b).
Mint N.H., intense shade and impression which stands out nicely from
its bright paper, unusually wide margins at sidesVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1857 ISSUE -- THE FIRST WE HAVE OFFERED IN FOURTEEN YEARS. This is the first Mint N.H. copy of the perforated 12c 1857 Issue (Scott 36 or 36b) we have offered since keeping computerized records. A review of multiples we have offered also did not yield any Mint N.H. singles, as most have been reinforced with hinges or have otherwise suffered the ravages of time With 1989 P.F. certificate (with selvage at left).
