even margins, brilliant color, small scissors-cut just into design at
bottom left, tied by Philadelphia blue "2" numeral in double-line
circle handstamp, second strike at right, on small cover to Miss
Benjaline French at "North 7th St. above Poplar, West Side,
Philadelphia", ms. "all pd" indicating full prepayment of both
the 5c rate (by stamp) and 2c carrier fee (handstamp)VERY FINE. A REMARKABLY BEAUTIFUL AND RARE COVER WITH THE 5-CENT 1847 PAYING THE 5-CENT RATE AND HANDSTAMPED "2" FOR CARRIER FEE. According to Dr. Vernon R. Morris Jr., this cover to North 7th Street (above Poplar) was correctly prepaid 5c, because the destination was outside the old city limits (pre-1854 consolidation). He further believes that the "2" handstamp was used to indicate payment received for "to the mails" carrier service (Chronicle 200, November 2003). Other students previously classified this as an overpaid drop-rate usage, but apparently they were unaware that mail to this location would be considered inter-city mail and subject to the 5c rate. "Philada. Pa. 5 Mar. 3" integral-rate circular datestamp and used with
Eagle City Post, Philadelphia Pa., (2c) Black (61L2), Type B with 46
points, tied by ms. "X", on 1849 blue folded letter to Carlisle Pa., ms.
"Paid 5cts" at top right, minor edgewear, both stamps with minor age and
gum stainsVERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED COMBINATION OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE WITH THE EAGLE CITY POST ISSUE "SAWTOOTH" ADHESIVE. A MAGNIFICENT POSTAL HISTORY RARITY. There are only two recorded 1847 Issue covers with Eagle City Post adhesives (Meyersburg census, Chronicle No. 156, Nov. 1992, and confirmed in Alexander 1847 Census). The earlier is this March 3, 1849, cover with the "Sawtooth" adhesive (Scott 61L2). The second is a July 25, 1850, cover to Providence R.I. with the small Red adhesive (Scott 61L3). None were offered in either Knapp, Gibson, Caspary, Rohloff or other major sales we reviewed. Ex Brown and Klein. The Scott Catalogue does not list No. 61L2 used in combination with any other issue.
