forwarded to Winchester N.H., orange-red "San Francisco Cal. 1 Mar."
circular datestamp and red crayon "42" rate (40c transcontinental rate plus
2c ship captain's fee), ms. "Ford" and "5", totaled in ms. to "47",
red "Newport N.H. Apr. 10" circular datestamp, ms. "Overland" in
corner suggests the sender originally intended this to go via
MexicoVERY FINE STRIKE OF THE HONOLULU STRAIGHTLINE, THE FIRST HANDSTAMPED POSTMARK OF HAWAII. According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, this cover was carried aboard the Corsair, which departed Honolulu on Jan. 31, 1851, arriving in San Francisco on Feb. 19. It was then carried aboard the California from San Francisco to Panama on March 5, 1851. There are currently 34 recorded examples of the Honolulu straightline in the Gregory census (including eight in blue). edition of The Polynesian newspaper from Honolulu,
interesting news incl. debate in U.S. Senate regarding British aggression
towards U.S. ships in the Gulf of Mexico and debates over how to respond,
an advertisement for Wells, Fargo & Co. appears inside, minor stain spot
and trivial small edge tearsVERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE WELLS, FARGO & COMPANY HONOLULU OFFICE MARKING ON A NEWSPAPER. Covers from this early period of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s express service in Hawaii are rare. This newspaper was probably on the top of a bundle carried by Wells, Fargo & Co. from Honolulu to San Francisco. Since its discovery in 1997, no others have surfaced. (Image Magnifier) |
