Panama. Clear red oval handstamp on orange-buff cover to "Purser
of S.S. Winfield Scott, Panama N.G." with ms. "Free A. &
Co." with ms. "x" denoting no fee to be charged, fresh and Extremely
Fine, this is the rarest of the Adams & Co. handstamps used by its Panama
office in 1852 and 1853, the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co.'s Winfield
Scott was a 1,291-ton steamer built in New York City in 1851, which was
put into service along the Pacific Coast route in 1852, on December 2,
1853, she was stranded off Anacapa Island in the Santa Barbara Channel and
lost, but the mails, passengers and cargo were saved, illustrated in DeVoss

between San Francisco and Crescent City, Port Orford and other towns in
Humboldt Bay, their partnership was dissolved in June 1854, and Leland
