46 c imagePan. & San. Fran. S.S. 12 Sep. Clear strike of PMSS Co. route agent's circular datestamp on blue folded letter datelined "St. Diego Cal. Sept. 3, 1850" to Brunswick Me., ms. "40" rate, some slight edgewear and minor waterstains at bottom right, Very Fine, an unusually bold strike and early use of this scarce marking, the "Pan. & San Fran. S.S." circular datestamp was used between September 1850 and June 1852 on mail handled by route agents aboard ships of the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company, while contract mail carried by PMSS Co. was received in locked bags, letters picked up en route were presumably postmarked by official route agents on board, as evidenced by approximately 25 known examples of the rare route agent markings on covers (Image Magnifier) E. 1,000-1,500 2,600.00
