(30). Unusually choice centering with perforations clear of design all
around, beautiful warm shade, tied by well-struck open grid, "New-York Aug.
20" circular datestamp on 1861 folded letter from Puerto Rico to
Halifax, Nova Scotia, via New York, bold "5" due marking, red
"Forwarded by J.N. Onativia S. Co., New-York" two-line handstamp
with "Augso. 1861" in ms, also with ms. "Missent to Newfoundland" at
left, neat "Boston Br. Pkt. Aug. 21" backstamp, faint vertical file fold,
some splitting along edges sensibly reinforcedVERY FINE. A REMARKABLE USAGE, SENT FROM PUERTO RICO TO A NEW YORK FORWARDER, THEN INTO THE MAILS TO HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, BUT MISSENT TO NEWFOUNDLAND. This extraordinary cover reached New York just as the new 1861 Issue was released and the demonetization of all earlier stamps commenced. Covers with the short-lived 5c Orange Brown are scarce, and, to the best of our knowledge, this is a unique usage. (Image) |

Jumbo margins all aroundEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 TYPE II 5-CENT BROWN. THIS GORGEOUS STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 JUMBO BY P.S.E. With 1987 and 1989 P.F. certificates. P.S.E. encapsulated (XF- Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $10,100.00 as 95, $16,100.00 as 98). This is the only 95 Jumbo in the P.S.E.  90c Blue (39). Deep rich
color, neat magenta ms. cancel, small thin spots and few nibbed
perfs at bottomFINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE. Used examples of Scott 39 are considerably scarcer than unused copies, as they were valid for a short period of time and were only used to pay high postage rates. The magenta wavy-line pen cancel on this stamp is also seen on the reconstructed multiple of five pictured in the Ishikawa book and sale catalogue. It has been attributed to "Shanghai, China", but on what basis we do not know. (Image) |

(43). Without gum as issued, beautiful rich color and proof-like
impression on bright white paper, remarkably choice centering for this
difficult stampEXTREMELY FINE GEM. ONE OF THE FINEST COPIES EXTANT OF THE 10-CENT 1857 REPRINT. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT VALUES OF THE SET TO OBTAIN IN SOUND, EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION. Only 516 were sold. As a means of comparing the quality of this stamp against some of the other existing copies, we searched through our Levi records and several past auction catalogues, looking for examples in comparable condition. Perhaps five in our records of hundreds of surviving examples compared favorably to the stamp offered here. With 1976 and 2000 P.F. certificates. (Image) |
