24c Grayish Lilac (78a).
Horizontal strip of three, nicely centered top to bottom, perfs slightly in
at left, tied by circle of wedges, "Salem Mass. Jul. 24" circular datestamp
on blue cover with printed address to Zanzibar via Aden, from the
Goodhue correspondence, printed "Via Marseilles" route instructions, red
"New York Paid All Jul. 25" transit datestamp, red "48" handstamp and same
credit in red crayon, red London transit datestamp ties strip, red crayon
"2" (pence) Colonial credit, additional red New York transit and
Steamer-Point Aden (Aug. 21, 1868) receiving datestamp on back, slightly
reduced at left, light edge wrinkles and wear, but far better condition
than most covers from this correspondence, left stamp in strip has diagonal
pre-use creaseVERY FINE APPEARANCE. PROBABLY A UNIQUE USE OF A 24-CENT 1861 ISSUE MULTIPLE TO PAY THE DOUBLE 36-CENT RATE TO ZANZIBAR BY BRITISH MAIL VIA MARSEILLES, WHICH EXISTED BRIEFLY FROM MARCH 1868 THRU DECEMBER 1869. Although the London receiving date is difficult to read, this was probably carried on the Cunarder Java, which departed New York on July 29, 1868, arriving at Queenstown on August 7. We recall handling only one other cover to Zanzibar at the 36c British Mail rate via Marseilles (Sale 764, lot 1760). This cover is the only double 36c rate usage to Zanzibar known to us. The 24c strip is in the distinct 1867-68 shade associated with the 24c F Grill (Scott 99). Ex Knapp (lot label affixed) (Image) |

24c Blackish Violet (78c).
Extraordinary depth of shade and impression on bright paper, cancelled by
open grid, perfectly struck "Brunswick Me. Oct. 3" double-circle datestamp
on buff cover to Liverpool, England, partly clear red credit
datestamp, London receiving backstamp (Oct. 15, 1864), reduced about
one-half inch at leftVERY FINE AND CHOICE STAMP ON A BEAUTIFUL FRESH COVER. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE QUINTESSENTIAL BLACKISH VIOLET SHADE OF THE 24-CENT 1861 ISSUE. IT WAS ACQUIRED BY THE CONSIGNOR IN THE 1941 KNAPP SALE AND HAS BEEN KEPT IN THE DARK FOR 66 YEARS, THEREBY PRESERVING THIS RARE SHADE TO A DEGREE WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. The 24c Blackish Violet, Scott 78c, is probably the rarest and most misunderstood of the various 24c shades. Our firm has offered almost all of the certified examples, including the finest original-gum and used off-cover copies. The cover offered here is remarkable not only as a very rare use of the 24c Blackish Violet on cover, but the fact that it was last purchased in 1941 and has not been exposed to light for 66 years makes this the truest Blackish Violet shade we have ever encountered. It is so intense, we worry that other certified Blackish Violet stamps would pale in comparison (this stamp should definitely not be the standard for Scott 78c, because it is simply too good). Ex Knapp with his "Black Violet" notation in pencil at lower left (lot label affixed). Scott Retail $9,500.00 on cover (Image) |
