1859, 1c Light Blue, Bluish
White (12). Plate 2-A, Type VII, Position 7, large even margins, lovely
pastel shade and sharp impression, cancelled by 4-ring target with
center punch (Ty. 133) and orange-red "G.P.O. Honolulu Paid All"
circular datestamp (Ty. 245.02, Rarity 1RR), small hole caused by
center punch and minor thin spotsEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THESE CANCELLATIONS ON THE 1859 ONE-CENT BLUE NUMERAL ISSUE, INDICATING A VERY LATE USE OF THE STAMP. For this particular type of target, Gregory reports "Honolulu, July 23, 1870 to December 13, 1875 on domestic and foreign mail", and for the Honolulu 245.02 datestamp "July 22, 1870 to September 5, 1870. Rarity 1RR, nineteen strikes recorded, including thirteen covers and one large piece." The first letter "A" of the month is visible in this strike, thus it is probably an August 1870 use of the 1c Blue Numeral, which is more than ten years after its original issue date. (Image) |

The added appeal of the complete datestamp on a small piece distinguishes this example from the others. (Image) |
