Mos. -- $3.35"EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS HONOLULU GENERAL POST OFFICE HANDSTAMP, OF WHICH TWO ARE KNOWN USED AS AN OFFICIAL CORNER CARD. ONLY THIS COVER HAS THE ORIGINAL POST OFFICE ENCLOSURE. There are three reported covers with the distinctive large red lozenge handstamp used by the Honolulu Post Office both as a corner card and as a postmark. The other corner-card usage was recently sold as part of the Floyd Fitzpatrick collection (Rumsey Sale 22, lot 1958, realized $7,250 hammer). It is also addressed to Reverend Wilcox, but does not have the enclosure. The postmark usage was lot 2213 in the Honolulu Advertiser sale (Siegel Sale 769). Ex Honolulu Advertiser and Pietsch. Custom House Lahaina
Maui. Blue negative seal with illustration of full-rigged ship in
center (Ty. 303, Rarity 1R), clear strike on front only to the
Reverend Richard Armstrong, a member of the Fifth Company of missionaries,
as President of the Board of Education in Honolulu, ms. "Official" written
over marking, pencil docketing at left, "Jan. 9/1860", tiny erosion
hole just below "President"VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE SCARCE LAHAINA CUSTOMS SEAL HANDSTAMP. Cornelius Bartow, the Lahaina postmaster, had earlier requested a regular mail canceller, but used the circular "Custom House" seal in the interim. In a follow-up letter to the postmaster-general, he wrote: "Did you order a stamp for the department of this place? It seems to me very necessary, as I am now compelled to use the Custom House seal." cover to Warren Goodale as Collector General of Customs in Honolulu,
shortly before he resigned to join the U.S. Army, effective December 31,
1863, ms. "Free P.H.T." (P. H. Treadway), bit reduced at
left, far from markings and address, Very Fine and rare, unlisted in
American Stampless Cover Catalog, in addition to his duties as
postmaster, Treadway was sheriff and Collector of Customs, ex Honolulu

Manuscript postmark in two lines with matching "Free" on folded letter
datelined "Makawao May 30, 1850" from D. D. Baldwin to his
missionary father in LahainaVERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST FORM OF WAILUKU POSTMARK, APPLIED BY THE FIRST "UNOFFICIAL" POSTMASTER, REVEREND EDWARD W. BAILEY. According to Gregory, the Wailuku post office was officially established in 1859. Prior to 1859, the Reverend Eward W. Bailey served as an unofficial postmaster. This Wailuku postmark, reported to be the earliest example extant, is in the hand of the Reverend Bailey.
