pristine, the mourning envelope was for the late Kamehameha IV (died Nov.
1863), probably sent free of Hawaiian postage owing to Royal origin, the 6c

endorsement "By the 'Warwick'" in same hand, docketed "Kaiho
Apaa" and "His Majesty, Sept. 25, 1865"VERY FINE. A RARE ROYAL HAWAIIAN COVER FROM KING KAMEHAMEHA V TO HIS RECENTLY-APPOINTED MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, FERDINAND W. HUTCHISON. King Kamehameha V, the former Prince Lot Kamehameha, assumed the throne in 1863 after the unexpected death of his brother, Kamehameha IV. He was the last ruler of the Kamehameha dynasty. Ferdinand W. Hutchison, a British national, was appointed court physician in 1863, and, in 1865, he became Minister of the Interior. Hutchison later served as supervisor of the Board of Health and was active in efforts to treat leprosy. Covers from Kamehameha V are known with a "K" and "KV" frank. It is not known whether any of the known the free franks and addresses, which vary slightly, were written by Kamehameha V himself or by a court secretary. Ex Pietsch (Image) |
