VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFULLY STRUCK EXAMPLE OF THE HONOLULU STRAIGHTLINE POSTMARK. ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING POSTAL HISTORY RARITIES OF HAWAII.

According to www.hawaiianstamps.com, this cover was carried aboard the Columbus, which departed Honolulu on Apr. 1 1851, arriving in San Francisco on Apr. 20. It was then carried aboard the Oregon from San Francisco to Panama on May 1, 1851. There are currently 34 recorded examples of the Honolulu straightline in the Gregory census (including eight in blue).

In this letter, Thaddeus Pomeroy reports to his brother that he is unable to travel due to illness and leaks in the ship, writing: "I have been revelling the last six months in the idea of getting home to die comfortably at the old homestead this summer & if the Barque had not returned I should probably have succeeded, as the fates have denied me that privilege I must now be content to remain here some two or three months & then return to live.."

It was then carried aboard the Tennessee from San Francisco to Panama on Apr. 1, 1851. There are currently 34 recorded examples of the Honolulu straightline in the Gregory census (including eight in blue).

We hear much said about Revolution-annexation. Russian assumption -- French Invasion -- and many other humbugs relating to the Sandwich Islands which serve for the amusement of us... You speak of a party here wanting to break down the King & Chiefs -- and manage the affairs of the Government themselves... I hope the time is not far distant when the personal property of every individual will be protected -- it is not so now.
