"PER FRANCES PALMER" straightline name-of-ship handstamp (Gregory
Ty. AUXSH-SF [PER FRANCES PALMER], Rarity 1RRRR) on buff cover to
Henry S. Stark, captain of the R. F. Hoxie, in care of Harris T.
Fitch in Honolulu, backstamped with blue oval of H. K. Cummings & Co.,
commission merchants in San Francisco, with original letter datelined San
Francisco, Nov. 14, 1855, regarding business and shipping, sealed tear at
left does not affect markings, flap tears thru sender's ovalA FINE COVER WITH THE ONLY RECORDED STRIKE OF THE "PER FRANCES PALMER" NAME-OF-SHIP HANDSTAMP WITHOUT QUOTATION MARKS. Gregory reports only this cover as an example of the "PER FRANCES PALMER" straightline without quotation marks around the name of ship. Jul. 19" transit datestamp, slightly reduced at leftEXTREMELY FINE. REPORTED TO BE THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE "STMR. KILAUEA" INTER-ISLAND STEAMSHIP DATESTAMP EXTANT. According to Gregory, the S.S. Kilauea was "an 806-ton wooden hull screw steamer built by Tibbetts and Sorenson at Honolulu in 1878. She continued in the interisland trade until past 1900. Until 1885, she was operated by Capt. Hobron for runs between Honolulu and Kahului. She was transferred to Wilder's Steamship Company in 1885." Ex Fitzpatrick. (Image) |
