Nov. 27" circular datestamp on cover to local Honolulu street address,
pencil docketing with 1881 year date, stamp nibbled away at top, cover
reduced at left, still an attractive and very scarce local use of the 1c

"G.P.O. Honolulu, Paid All, Nov. 21" double-circle datestamp (Ty. 277.12)
on yellow cover to San Francisco with "John Neill, Machinist, Lock and
Gun Smith, Also Sewing Machines and Material.." advertising card across top
and billboard ads on back for six different advertisers, including H.
I. Nolte (coffee and billiard saloon), Challamel & Co. (wine importers), M.
McInerny (shoes and clothing), S. K. Rawson (watchmaker, with illustration
of pocket watch), C. E. Williams (furniture) and Dillingham & Co.
(hardware), each with street address in Honolulu, red "San Francisco Paid
All Dec. 2" receiving datestamp, docketed at right, stamp has corner crease
and couple short perfs, tiny nick in edge of cover at lower right, still
Very Fine, one of the most striking of the few billboard advertising covers
known from Hawaii, ex Norbeck and Pietsch

(33). Tied by 3-ring target with 3-hole punch applied at Honolulu (Ty.
116), two strikes of "Makawao Post Office Mar. 27" originating
circular datestamp (Ty. 243.22, Rarity 1RRR) on bright buff cover to
Brimfield Mass., red "Honolulu H.I. Paid All Apr. 4, 1878" rimless
datestamp, bold magenta "San Francisco Paid All Apr. 15" transit datestamp,
some very trivial edgewear, Very Fine, the two distinctive large circular
datestamps were introduced by W. L. Davis, postmaster from 1877 to 1880,
Gregory reports ten examples of this "Makawao Post Office" variety, the
three-punch target was applied at Honolulu (in its earliest state, the
cancel pierces the paper -- this is an intermediate state leaving
impressions in the paper, but not puncturing it)
