Numeral Issues (Scott 17 thru 18)
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
4099° image1863, 2c Dark Blue, Bluish (17). Plate 5-B, Type IV, Position 4, broken toe of "2" variety, large even margins, neatly cancelled by blue "Lahain(a Hawaiiian-Islands) July 21" circular datestamp, couple thin spots and sealed tear at bottom not detracting in any way from the appearance

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE USED EXAMPLES OF THE RARE 1863 2-CENT DARK BLUE ON BLUISH PAPER. THE ONLY COPY KNOWN TO US WITH THE LAHAINA DATESTAMP STRUCK IN BLUE.

The 2c Dark Blue on Bluish paper (Scott 17) was printed after Scott 18 and before Scott 20. It is one of the rarest of all Numeral Issues in either unused or used condition, and almost all known examples have small faults. This stamp is the only example of Scott 17 we were able to locate with a blue town datestamp used as a cancel.

Ex Middendorf, Ishikawa and Honolulu Advertiser. With 1967 P.F. certificate. The broken "2" variety is unlisted in Scott (value is for normal stamp without premium for variety or cancel). (Image)
