(Unlisted in Scott, Yvert C1). Air Post issue of Madagascar overprinted
"Terre Adelie Dumont Durville 1840", tied by "Terre Adelie Antactique 24-1
1952" circular datestamp on cover to Paris, second strike of circular
datestamp at left, also with "Expedition Antarctique Francaise" three-line
handstamp, boxed "Base Pointe Geologie 1951/1952" handstamp, also with
expedition backstamp, Very Fine and choice, a very rare usage, the main
base at Port Martin, Adelie Land burned down on June 21, 1952, five members
remained at Geology Point and one of them sent this cover to their Paris
office, a remarkable artifact (Image) |
