Little Rock Ark. 1861 17 May
-- Last Day of Arkansas Independent Statehood. Well-struck
double-circle datestamp, matching target cancel ties 3c Dull Red (26) on
buff cover to Wadesboro N.C., evidently missent (to S.C.?) and re-routed
with "Paid" handstamp also tying stamp, upon arrival in Wadesboro -- after
June 1st -- the postmaster at receiving office rated the letter "10" in
pencil for 10c Confederate postage due, a fascinating usage from Arkansas
on the last day of Independent Statehood (admitted to C.S.A. on May 18th)
and rated with both U.S. and Confederate postage, signed Dietz (Image) |
