Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
1533 c Robert E. Lee. Bold signature "R. E. Lee Genl" at top right of yellow cover addressed in his hand to Dr. Orlando Fairfax in Richmond Virginia, the cover also bears horizontal pair of 5c Blue, De La Rue (6) tied by "Richmond Va. Dec. 31, 1862" circular datestamp, expertly repaired horizontal file fold at top

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF LEE'S SIGNATURE IN COMBINATION WITH CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE STAMPS.

The original enclosure, not included, was a letter of condolence for the death of Randolph Fairfax, who was killed at Fredericksburgh. According to the Monroe census, there are fifteen Robert E. Lee postally-used covers in private hands (that is, covers bearing Lee's signature, which actually entered the Confederate postal system). Of these, only four have 5c pairs (No. 6 or 7).
