covers acquired by the Clipperts over a 40-year period with a concentrated
effort during the past decade, most are still on the original lot cards

The Red River and its tributary, the Ouachita, facilitated steamboat navigation from as early as 1814. Although the fluctuating water levels caused some irregularity in routes and service, the Red and Ouachita Rivers were extremely active during the decade preceding the Civil War. The Clippert collection, comprising 443 covers with name-of-boat markings, provides the raw material for an important mounted collection or exhibit of mail carried by steamboats along this vital waterway.
