October 1821". Ms. postmark and "25" rate on folded letter datelined
"Dardanelles Octr. 11th 1821" to Mary B. Brearley in Trenton N.J.,
from her father, probably Joseph H. Brearley (later postmaster of
Dardanelle), interest content with a description of travels thru Arkansas
Territory including mention of large herds of buffalo, a bit toned,
otherwise Very Fine, listed in ASCC as the earliest dated postmark from
Little Rock (post office established in 1820)

The Clippert Collection of
Arkansas Postal Markings. Approximately 200-250 covers, most on auction
lot cards as acquired over 40 years, a fantastic range of town markings and
some better usages, stampless and stamped, includes Indian Territory such
as "Camp Supply Ind. Ter.", "Tahlequah C N" (scarce large double-circle),
ms. "Fort Arbuckle C.N.", "Fort Washita Ark.", "Atoka P.O. Ind. Tery."
oval, "Kaw Agency Indian Territory", a good showing of Little Rock and
Camden, condition varies as usual for a state study, but overall Fine-Very
Fine, a fantastic holding with numerous covers in the $75-150 value range
and a substantial number that cost $300-500 each -- worth close and careful

Bold perfectly-struck fancy sawtooth circular datestamp (with "30" in ms.)
and ms. "50" double rate on folded letter to Cabot Vt. datelined "Elliot
Chata. [Choctaw] Nation, August 29th 1826" (and again on Sep.
29), four large and long pages of content from a female missionary
schoolteacher to her family, interesting content about the school
(routines, conditions, difficulties, disease, etc.) with a cautionary note
not to allow anything from missionaries to be published in the Vermont
newspapers, light toning and some splitting along folds, still Extremely
Fine and a magnificent example of this rare Mississippi fancy townmark (Image) |
