1454° c imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 7c Black on Buff Entire (34LU11). To San Francisco addressee with 3c Dull Red (11), ample margins to slightly in, pencil "X" and tied by "Penny Post Co. San Francisco" double-line circular handstamp, vertical crease thru stamp is not very noticeable

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE ON A CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY 7-CENT ENTIRE.

The 3c 1851 stamp was necessary to pay the U.S. government rate from one of the towns served by the California Penny Post Co. to San Francisco. In this case the origin is unknown. The 7c Penny Post Co. entire was designed to pay the rates for delivery to the post office (2c) and delivery from the post office in San Francisco (5c), although it appears that this cover never entered the regular mails. Eight used entires are reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post.

1455° nh imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 7c Black on 3c Red on Buff Entire (34LU11a). Conjunctive use to Stockton with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Express Steamboat" framed handstamp, repaired along edge at top center but not affecting frank

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A VERY RARE USE OF THE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY ENTIRE IN CONJUNCTION WITH WELLS, FARGO & COMPANY'S STEAMBOAT SERVICE.

Fourteen used entires are reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post. Only a few conjunctive usages between the California Penny Post Company and Wells, Fargo & Co. are known. Presumably Wells, Fargo & Co. carried the letter from San Francisco to Sacramento on one of their regular steamer runs. (Image)

1456° c imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, 7c Blue on 3c Red on Buff Entire (34LU11a var). This frank is listed by Scott only in Black, "Sacramento City Cal. May 13" (1856) circular datestamp, to San Francisco street address, ms. "PP" (Penny Post)

EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY ENTIRE IN BLUE.

This variation of the "Penny-Postage Paid, 7" frank (Haller P10-Ty. 3a, Scott L98A) is printed in blue, not black, and contains the words "Care of" in tiny type between the denomination and "To The Penny Post Co." imprint. Both we and Larry Lyons record three examples: 1) Undated, Wells Fargo & Co. Sacramento ovals, to San Francisco, ex Knapp, Barkhausen, Golden, 2) Benicia Cal. May 12 (1856) datestamp, to San Francisco, ex Dale-Lichtenstein, Golden, and 3) Sacramento City Cal. May 13 (1856) datestamp, the cover offered here, ex Chapman, Polland, Haas, Siegel Sale 773. These entires were probably printed in mid-1856 toward the end of the Penny Post Company's existence (reported to have occurred in June 1856). The Scott Catalogue has not yet listed the 34LU11a in Blue, even though all three have been offered at auction during the past nine years.

1457° c imageCalifornia Penny Post Co., San Francisco, "Collect Penny Postage" in Black on Buff Entire (34LU11C). No denomination stated, used with 3c Dull Red (11), ample margins to slightly in, bright shade, tied by large blue rectangular grid, matching "Marysville Cal. Feb. 26" circular datestamp on entire to San Francisco street address, interesting docketing on back: "(4) See C. F. Taylor & Co., recd the 27th Feb. of H.L.G. [Henry L. Goodwin] H. D. Loomis, See letter for Taylor", mended tear at top into frank, vertical fold

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE OF CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY FRANK AND ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

The docketing on back is probably related to Goodwin's dispute with the San Francisco post office over operation of his private local and inter-city post. This "Collect" entire without a denomination stated is extremely rare, this is the only example known to us or listed by Larry Lyons in his census (The Penny Post, July 2005).

VERY FINE. AN IMMACULATE EXAMPLE OF THE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY 7-CENT INTER-CITY RATE ENTIRE WITH 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

Thirteen used entires are reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post.

EXTREMELY FINE. A REMARKABLY PRISTINE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE CALIFORNIA PENNY POST COMPANY ENTIRE. ONLY THREE OF THE ORNATE BORDER FRANK ARE KNOWN ON THE WHITE NESBITT ENTIRE.

Only three used entires are reported in Lyons census in July 2005 Penny Post. Another example of the rare 34LU12 entire travelling in the reverse direction, from Stockton to San Francisco, was offered in our Hall sale (Sale 830, lot 533, realized $4,250 hammer).
