Sacramento street address, embossed stamp cancelled by "San Francisco Cal.
Dec. 3, 1861" double-circle datestamp and "SHIP 5" handstamp,
slightly reduced at right, Extremely Fine, the blue frank is extremely
rare, this usage with the "Ship 5" marking is believed to be unique, the
sender's origin is unknown but the ship marking indicates it entered San
Francisco post office as a 3c plus 2c ship letter (possibly from Hawaii?)

"This was in an Express Box, which was lost some time ago, in Bitter
Creek, 230 m east of Salt Lake City, and but now recovered. T.F.J. Agent,
Salt Lake City, July 25/68", blue "Wells, Fargo & Co. Salt Lake Cty.
U.T. Jul. 25" oval datestamp, "Union Pacific R.R. Jul. -" circular
datestamp and target, minor edge faults and some stains, Fine and
exhibitable, a fantastic piece of recovered express mail, Salt Lake City
lies about 500 miles east of Virginia City, and Bitter Creek, Wyoming,
another 200 miles east of Salt Lake City -- this express cover wound up
returning to Salt Lake City before making the eastbound trip on the Union

struck over both embossed stamps, matching "Collect" oval handstamp,
entered mails in New York City with 3c Rose (65), s.e., tied by
circle of wedges and "New-York Dec. ?" duplex datestamp, small "Occidental
Hotel, San Francisco, Cal." label at bottom of addressed entire, some tears
on back where partially separated, opened for display, Very Fine, this
extremely rare "Collect" entire is unlisted in Haller but undoubtedly
originated with Wells, Fargo & Co.'s San Francisco office, with 1983 P.F.
