EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS TOPPAN, CAPENTER, CASILIER & COMPANY ESSAY.

As an indication of rarity, this is the first example we have offered since keeping computerized records. Also, none was offered in the auction of the amazing Brazer collection, held by our firm in 1990. (Image)

1047 E imageToppan, Carpenter, Casilier & Co., 1c Black, Die Essay on India, "Six Cents" (5-E2). Cut to shape as always and mounted on stamp-size piece of India paper, intense shade, Very Fine example of this scarce essay and in better condition than most, according to an essay published in Ashbrook's One-Cent book, a 6c stamp was contemplated to pay the single-letter rate for distances over 3,000 miles, according to Brazer it appears that the 6c was changed to 1c because of the need for this value (Image) 2,750.00
