"Mons. Carlincourt, Aeronaut" illustrated cover, addressed to to
Carlincourt in Utica N.Y., small cover repair at top is barely
noticeableVERY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT EARLY BALLOON-RELATED COVER WITH THE CARLINCOURT DESIGN. Carlincourt was the name T. S. C. Lowe assumed early in his career as an aeronaut. His first flight was in Ottawa, Canada in 1858. He made several flights in the northeast before twice attempting a transatlantic balloon flight, first in 1859 and again in 1860. Ex Grunin (Image) |

and "22P" of plate no., tied (between perfs) by penstrokes, matching
indistinct ms. pmk. on cover, slightly reduced at left, both with some
overall wear, Very Fine, attractive and scarce with the plate no. selvage

scarce usage, carried outside of the mails from Colorado to Kans., Fort
Larned was not a regular post office until 1866 and so this was probably
carried with other military mail to Fort Riley
