Germany, blue "10" crayon rate, some edgewear, Very Fine, rare 1c
credit marking, the letter went by American packet so U.S. retained 3c
internal postage plus 6c for American Packet, Richard Winter records only
about twelve strikes of this marking (Image) |

New York City Ship Letter Markings. 75 covers on annotated exhibit
pages in two volumes, years range from 1793 to 1908, markings incl.
straightline and 10 of the attractive "clamshell" framed handstamp (2 in
red, 8 in black), most early covers with ship and/or captain's names
designated by sender, various rates incl. 1798 red clamshell with $1.04
(postage plus 4c ship fee), origins incl. Jamaica, Haiti, China (1837 per
Niantic), Macao, European countries, a few later covers with stamps,
all carefully identified by vessel with extensive background notes and
transcripts of better content, very clean condition, a wonderful collection
of maritime mail via the port of New York |

orange-buff cover to Ellington Conn., sender's endorsement "p 'Henry
Brigham' via San Francisco } Japan Jan. 23, 1864", neat receipt
docketing dated Mar. 22, "W. & Co. Japan" embossed return card on flap,
small opening nick at top right, otherwise Very Fine, the Henry
Brigham left Yokohama on Jan. 29 and arrived in San Francisco on Feb.
25, 1864, examples of mail from Japan to the U.S. are very scarce in this
