Cunard Transatlantic Sailings. 223 covers on annotated exhibit pages in six albums, an in-depth study of this preeminent transatlantic mail transporter, generally arranged by ship name, years range from 1840 to the 1920's, stampless and stamped covers (U.S. and G.B. frankings), many maiden and last voyages, disrupted voyages, record-breaking trips, all carefully described and documented, among the items noted are 1851 London to Bermuda on the Halifax-Bermuda line, Harnden forwarder oval, Europa 6/18/1849 collision with Charles Bartlett (which cut the American immigrant ship in half and left only 43 survivors of 177 persons aboard), Britannia 2/5/1844 sailing which was ice-bound in Boston Harbor (citizens helped cut a seven-mile passage thru the ice), scarce handstamped rate markings such as Boston "39-1/2" and "In U.S. Notes 72" in circle, Philadelphia "20-3/4", condition is generally clean and presentable, the documentation and photos are a fascinating supplement to this significant group of Cunard covers | E. 3,000-4,000 |
