Alexandria, where they were then sent by private steamer with the remaining

MR 29, 1866" backstamp where it entered the mails, London and New York
transits, sent via Marseilles and eventually on the HAPAG line's
Saxonia to New York, appropriate creditsFRESH AND FINE. A SCARCE STRIP OF THREE OF THE HONG KONG 1866 18-CENT LILAC ISSUE USED ON A COVER ORIGINATING IN THE PHILIPPINES AND SENT TO THE UNITED STATES. bold boxed "I.P.O." hs, bold strikes of Taku (Aug. 22), Shanghai (Aug. 28),
Hong Kong (Sept. 1) and receiving (Oct. 2) backstamps, some slight wear
incl. part of scuffed address partly retraced, otherwise Very Fine,
colorful and scarce usage, China was not a member of the U.P.U. and so its
stamps paid internal postage only, the Hong Kong stamps were applied in
Shanghai for postage through to Germany, accompanied by exhibit page giving
