Horizontal strip of three, large margins to just touched at bottom, tied by diamond grids on 1849 cover to New York, red "Paris 1 Nov. 1849" circular datestamp and matching boxed "PD" hs, London transit also ties stamps, bold strike of "5" in circle due marking, with original enclosure, missing small part of top flap, right stamp trivial corner crease

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE STRIP OF THREE OF THE FRANCE ONE-FRANC 1850 ISSUE.

Despite the "PD" handstamp (paid to destination), the letter was marked due 5c from the recipient, as postage was only paid to the border. (Image)

457 nh imageFRANCE, ALLIED MILITARY GOVERNMENT, Complete Unexploded "Specimen" Booklet. Ten different Mint N.H. panes of ten with interleaving, Perf 11, values include 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, 1fr, 1.50fr, 2.5fr, 4fr, 5fr and 10fr (Scott Nos. 2N1-2N10), each pane with large continuous "SPECIMEN" block letters overprint in purple, the cover is imprinted "SPECIMENS OF SUPPLEMENTAL FRENCH POSTAGE STAMPS".

VERY FINE. AN IMPORTANT BOOKLET RARITY.

A similar complete booklet but with "COMMITTEE" instead of "SUPPLEMENTAL" on the cover and with the second much more common series of stamps (Scott Nos. 2N11-2N20), realized $6,000 plus 10% at a June 2004 auction in New York City. An article by Joe Schirmer in the U.S. Possessions Journal (Volume 3, No. 1, 1980) discusses these booklets, and illustrates four (Austria, France, Germany and Italy) but makes no reference whatsoever to this variety. 459 nh imageGREAT BRITAIN AND UNITED STATES (JOINT ISSUE), ALLIED MILITARY GOVERNMENT, Complete Unexploded "Specimen" Booklet. Nine different Mint N.H. panes of ten with interleaving, Ty. I, Washington printing, Perf 11, Germany Scott Nos. 3N2a-3N9a, 3N13a which is the complete set of nine different for this printing, each pane with large block letter continuous "SPECIMEN" handstamp in purple.

VERY FINE AND VERY RARE.

An article by Joe Schirmer in the U.S. Possessions Journal (Volume 3, No. 1, 1980) stated that the U.S. Government had only fifteen of these booklets (in the Treasury Department or the Smithsonian), and it is unknown how many may be in private hands. We are aware of a sale at a January 2004 New York City auction where a similar booklet realized $8,500 plus 10%. We believe this and lot 457 are the only ones that have been offered at auction in probably the last two or three decades. (Image)

Horizontal pair and two singles of 1p, tied by "556" in grid cancels and matching "Dix Cove FE 26 76" circular datestamp on cover to Boston Mass., stamps also tied by red 1876 London transit and Boston receiving datestamp, red "Paid at Cape Coast Castle MR 2, 1876" double-circle datestamp, some slight edgewear affects a few stamps, minor cosmetic repairs, appears Very Fine, very rare usage of the First Issue of Gold Coast to the U.S., carried on the NGL Main from Southampton to New York, accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate and routing, Arthur White collection (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 12,500.00
