VICTORIA, 1850-54, 3p Blue, 6p
Orange, 1sh Blue (3, 17, 18). Large margins to just in, tied by neat
strikes of "1" in grids on 1858 folded cover to Birmingham, England,
light strike of red "Ship Letter Melbourne JY 15, 1858" and receiving
backstamps, 3p small nick at bottom, Very Fine and colorful usage, franked
to pay the Via Marseilles rate between -1/2 and -3/4oz. (2 x 6p plus 3 x 3p
= 1sh9p), accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate
and routing, Arthur White collection

Vermilion (3, 32). Two 3p, tied by bold strikes of "1" in grids on
cover to France, neat "Melbourne Victoria JY 25, 1857" and various
transit backstamps, red London transit, red ms. "4" credit, restated as "40
centi", some slight wear, Fine, scarce usage, no packet service was in
effect at this time, this was carried by private ship to England on the
King Phillip which took 84 days from Melbourne, the rate was 6p per
-1/2 oz. plus 4p per -1/4 oz. from Britain to France, accompanied by
exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate and routing, Arthur

VICTORIA, 1854, 2p Brown Lilac
(16). Horizontal strip of three, large margins all around, cancelled by
well-struck "1" in grids on blue 1857 folded letter to Dublin,
Ireland, neat "Melbourne Victoria JA 12 1857" and transit backstamps,
red "Australian Packet Paid Liverpool AP 12 57" datestamp and "1d" credit
hs, some slight wear barely affects stamps, appears Very Fine, scarce usage
paying the Packet Letter rate, carried on the Royal Charter which
was under contract with Victoria at the time, only 1p was credited to Great
Britain, accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate

"Per 'Simla' via Suez, Malta and England", red London transit, "N.
York Br. Pkt. 10 Dec. 25" debit datestamp, red ms. "1/4" credit applied in
error, some slight wear, appears Very Fine, scarce and unusual usage,
franked to pay the double rate, Britain mistakenly credited the U.S. for
1sh 4p but this was sent on a British ship, the Cunarder Persia,
marked 10c collect on arrival in New York, accompanied by exhibit page
