Pair and two singles of 1p, strip of three and single of 2p, large margins to just in, tied by well-struck "20" in rays handstamps of Liverpool on blue 1858 cover to Edinburgh, endorsed "Marseilles", bold "Liverpool N.S.W. DE 24, 1858", Sydney and receiving backstamps, some slight wear incl. one 2p affected from placement near edge of cover, appears Fine, a rare and unusual franking paying double 9p rate (technically underpaid 3p), this was carried on the last voyage of the European & Australian Royal Mail Co., the new contract was awarded to the West Indian Royal Mail Line, accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate and routing, Arthur White collection (Image)	E. 2,000-3,000	5,750.00

Large margins to just in, used with 1856 (6p) Registration stamp and tied by "191" in grids on blue 1857 registered cover to Birmingham, England, "Orange N.S.W. AP 9, 1857" origin backstamp, transit incl. Stone Creek (Apr. 9), Sydney (Apr. 13), Liverpool (Aug. 1) and Birmingham (Aug. 3), bold strike of red "Registered/Sydney Creek" two-line handstamp, 6d due marking, some slight wear, Very Fine and colorful registered usage, This registered letter just missed the sailing of the Columbian which departed Sydney on April 11, two days before this was received, It also was not placed on the Oneida which left Sydney on May 5 directly for Southampton, as her engines were in need of repair and she was sent under sail and so no registered mails were entrusted to her, It had to wait for the sailing of the Simla on May 25 where it was carried to Suez, At Alexandria, no vessels were available and so the British Consul chartered the sailing ship Scamander to carry the English mails to Liverpool via Malta, Mails sent via Southampton (as was this one) arrived in Liverpool on the Scamander, where it was accepted as being from an Australian packet, since the sailing was chartered, There was a 6p packet letter charge due from the recipient, Accompanied by exhibit page giving detailed explanation of rate and routing, Arthur White collection (Image)	E. 2,000-3,000	4,000.00

MR 12 1856" and transit backstamps, Feb. 1, 1856 Auckland docketing on back, red "Australian Packet Paid Liverpool JU 21, 1856" datestamp, ms. "1/1" debit, "3 Cents" debit and "N. York Am.
