30c Columbian (239).
Bottom imprint and plate no. block of six, vibrant color on bright paper,
each stamp almost perfectly centered, this is a Mint N.H. plate block,
but three stamps are described on accompanying certificate as having been
"chemically reinforced" along perforations, which is nothing more than
minute almost undetectable collodion reinforcement between a few
perfsEXTREMELY FINE. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED PLATE BLOCK OF THE 30-CENT COLUMBIAN ISSUE. In our opinion and with all due respect to The Philatelic Foundation, the "chemically reinforced" comment reaches way beyond the traditional standards for judging plate blocks and multiples. The application of gum or fixative between a few perfs in a plate block is nothing new, and it has never disqualified an item from Mint N.H. status. This 30c Columbian plate block is still one of the finest in existence. Ex Silver Lake. With 2001 P.S.E. certificate stating that it is Mint N.H. and with 2004 P.F. certificate (Image) |
