FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 1870 3-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN PRINTED ON BOTH SIDES. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE BANK NOTE ISSUES.

The 3c Grilled Bank Note issue is not known printed on both sides. Scott Catalogue value for Scott 147a has remained virtually unchanged for over 30 years -- it catalogued $1,000.00 in 1971. The finest of the three recorded examples sold for $11,500 hammer in our 2004 Rarities sale(this was the only example ever certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine).

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1873 3-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. ONLY TWO OR THREE ARE KNOWN.

All examples of this variety are reported to have weak impressions on back -- this is reported to be the finest. A pair was offered in our 1967 Rarities sale but was not even photographed. A single was subsequently offered in the 1978 Kaufmann Gems sale, which may have been part of the pair. The example offered here was acquired by the present owner from Irwin Weinberg's 1986 Treasures of Philately catalogue and is offered to the market for the first time in almost 20 years. (Image)
