VERY FINE. WE KNOW OF ONLY FOUR COVERS TO DENMARK BEARING THE IMPERFORATE 1851-56 ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY COVER SENT VIA PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL AND THE ONLY COVER ORIGINATING IN SAN FRANCISCO.

The prevailing rates to Denmark in June 1857 were: 27c Bremen Packet, 21c British Open Mail, 35c Prussian Closed Mail and 27c French Mail. The 30c franking on this cover and German transit markings indicate that this was sent to Denmark as if it were a 30c Prussian Closed Mail rate cover to Germany. There is no evidence of postage collected from the addressee. It was carried from San Francisco to New York via Panama. From New York it was carried on the Cunard's Europa, departing July 1, 1857, and arriving in Liverpool on July 11.

85 image10c Green, Ty. IV (16). Positions 54-55L1, horizontal pair, both stamps recut at bottom, large margins all around, pretty pastel color, grid cancels, left stamp with part of red transit cancel, three tiny tears at top between stamps and tiny tear at bottom left (the latter not mentioned on accompanying certificate)

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE PAIR OF THE 10-CENT TYPE IV 1855 ISSUE.

There are only two places on the plate where a horizontal pair of Type IV can occur: Positions 54-55L1 and Positions 64-65L1. The Scott Catalogue should really differentiate pricing between horizontal pairs and vertical pairs in their pricing, as there are four places where a vertical pair can occur, and one place where a vertical strip of three can occur.

With 1987 P.F. certificate. (Image)
