VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY FIVE KNOWN FIRST DAY COVERS OF THE FIRST SPECIAL DELIVERY ISSUE. A GREAT RARITY AND ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER OF ALL BACK-OF-BOOK FIRST DAY COVERS.

The recipient, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel C. Pierce, was a Civil War Veteran and life-long Republican. He worked on many U.S. Government contracts after his discharge and was Sergeant-at-Arms of the Constitutional Convention of 1868. Upon receipt of this cover on October 1, 1885, he wrote in pencil "Sent to me as on the 1st day the Immediate Postal delivery went into effect. Oct. 1, 1885."

EXTREMELY FINE. A TRULY MAGNIFICENT AND RARE COVER. ONE OF ONLY TWO SUCH COVERS KNOWN AND ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF DR. MARTIN'S BACK-OF-BOOK ISSUES.

Both issues came out on the same day, but are rarely seen in combination on First Day covers, even as singles. We sold the other combination plate block cover in McCusker Sale #47 at the July 1993 AFDCS Convention to Dr. Baron for $3,250. This was subsequently sold in our Baron Rarity Sale in 1996 for $3,750 hammer. The cover offered here was originally acquired by Dr. Martin in 1986 for $2,250 (Image)

THIS IS THE EARLIEST DOCUIMENTED USE OF THE 1917 10-CENT SPECIAL DELIVERY ISSUE, SCOTT E15. THIS PREDATES THE OFFICIAL FIRST DAY BY TWELVE DAYS. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BACK-OF-BOOK ITEMS IN THE DR. MARTIN COLLECTION.

This is most likely non-philatelic in origin and contained legal documents that needed to be "rushed" to Washington's Patent Office.
