Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
c image-1/2c-10c Washington Bicentennial (704-715). Complete set of twelve, also cut square Nos. U523-U525 and U527-U528, all seventeen were issues on the same day, very few covers exist with this multiple franking, certainly less than 20 are known of these, this is perhaps the most interesting as it is on the reverse of an 8 x 10 in. photograph depicting the original twelve images from which the engraved designs of the set of Nos. 704-715 were made, it also depicts a gentleman next to the photographs with a caption below handwritten by Sol Bloom that says "To Boyd Crawford, with very best wishes Sol Bloom and Herbert Hoover" -- "Herbert Hoover" is actually an original signature of the President, probably unique and a great match to the set of twelve individual First Day photographs offered in lot 551 (Image) E. 1,200-1,500 700.00
c image-1/2c-10c Washington Bicentennial (704-715). Planty #75, official cachet by "Congress of the United States Joint Committee on Printing" with Red printed cachet and matched typed addresses to "The Public Printer", extremely clean as if it were just produced, pristine and quite rare, we have handled only one other set with this cachet and that was a single cover with all twelve issues some 15 years ago (Image) E. 500-750 250.00
c image-1/2c-10c Washington Bicentennial (704-715). Complete set of twelve, also cut square Nos. U523-U525 and U527-U528 on one Planty #7 multicolored printed cacheted #10 business-size cover, typed addressed to "The President" and signed "Herbert Hoover", all seventeen stamps were issued on the same day, very few covers exist with this multiple franking, certainly less than 20 are known, even fewer are known with the signature of then-President Herbert Hoover, a great exhibit item and only the second example we have seen (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 900.00
c image-1/2c-10c Washington Bicentennial (704-715). Unlisted set of twelve photographs of the original paintings measuring 7 x 5 in. used to engrave the set of stamps, each photograph has the appropriate stamp recreated from the original painting tied on the reverse by First Day Washington D.C. January 1, 1932 duplex cancel, signed by the then-Superintendent of Stamps just above the rubber stamp "Superintendent, Division of Stamps, Post Office Department, Washington, D.C." , produced by the Post Office and undoubtedly given to a very select group of dignitaries, this is the first set we have seen and a great match for the Hebert Hoover-signed larger First Day photograph offered in lot 548 (Image) E. 1,000-1,500 500.00
c image-1/2c-10c Washington Bicentennial (704-715). Planty #35, complete set of twelve on four A. E. Gorham engraved cachets, all tied by unofficial U.S.S. Hamilton New Years Day duplex cancel, elegant set and seldom seen, only the second we have ever offered (Image) E. 250-300 150.00
c image1c-10c Washington Bicentennial (705-715). On unlisted hand-made FDCs with tied paste-on cachets, fourteen covers total incl. some bearing combination of all issues except the -1/2c, 4c and 9c values, matched addressed and unique (Image) E. 300-450 0.00
