303 c image30c Franklin (71). Tied by neat strike of grid, "New London Ct. Aug. 20, 1861" circular datestamp on grayish blue linen-lined cover to Honolulu, Hawaii, stamp with faults incl. small tear at top and affected by horizontal file fold

THIS IS THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USE OF THE 30-CENT 1861 ISSUE. A REMARKABLE ITEM, THIS DATE HAS STOOD AS THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USE FOR ALMOST 70 YEARS.

Dr. Martin seldom purchased EDU's. However, this 30c 1861 cover had a long history of being the EDU, and the August 20 date is very close to the date of distribution for the new 1861 Issue. It was once part of George B. Sloane's collection and appeared in an article in Stamps Magazine written by Sloane. Today, nearly 70 years later, it still remains the EDU.
