EXTREMELY FINE STAMP ON AN IMMACULATE AND COLORFUL FOLDED LETTER FROM THE CELEBRATED CHARNLEY & WHELEN CORRESPONDENCE.

During this period the St. Louis post office used its datestamp to cancel 1847 stamps rather than obliterating them with the circular grid cancel. This superb stamp and cover beautifully demonstrate the practice. (Image)
