155 c image$5.00 Columbian (245). Almost perfectly centered, deep shade, tied by sharp strike of "New York P.O. May 11 2:30 PM" 1894 duplex datestamp and oval grid on European size cover to local addressee

EXTREMELY FINE $5.00 COLUMBIAN ON AN IMMACULATE COVER, CREATED IN 1894 WITH STAMP COLLECTORS IN MIND.

When the Columbian series was issued in 1894, the year of the Pullman railroad strike and Income Tax Act, there was an outcry from collectors over the high cost of the new commemorative stamps, more than $16.00 per set. Nevertheless, some collectors who wished to obtain used examples invested heavily by using high-denomination Columbian stamps. This cover, mailed locally in New York City, was overfranked by almost all of the $5.00 postage. The sender was careful to pick a well-centered stamp and have the postal clerk carefully hand-cancel it.

With 1980 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail $4,750.00 (Image)

E. 4,000-5,000 3,250.00
