3c Green, Grill (136). H.
Grill, beautiful deep shade with printer's ink smear, tied by perfect bold
strike of Nagasaki "X" in Box woodblock cancel on folded cover
from Nagasaki to Yokohama, Japan, Pignatel & Co.'s double oval
handstamp, sender's ship designation "per 'Golden Age'", receipt
docketing indicates Oct. 6, 1873 origin date, tiny erosion spot in file
foldVERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE INTER-CONSULAR RATE COVER FROM NAGASAKI TO YOKOHAMA WITH THE 3-CENT GRILLED BANK NOTE STAMP TIED BY ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST DISTINCTIVE OF ALL JAPANESE CANCELLATIONS USED ON UNITED STATES STAMPS. This inter-consular usage from Nagasaki to Yokohama should not be confused with Pignatel & Co. covers originating in Yokohama and Hiogo, which we believe are more common (an example from Yokohama realized $3,500 hammer in our Sale 855, lot 19). The distinctive "X" in Box woodblock cancel on this cover is enormously rare, in fact, we have been unable to locate another example in reference books or major past sales of U.S.P.O.'s in Japan. This cover was carried by the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s Golden Age. Signed Bloch and Hahn. (Image) |
