VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE INTER-CONSULAR RATE COVER FROM NAGASAKI TO YOKOHAMA WITH THE 3-CENT GRILLED BANK NOTE STAMP TIED BY ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST DISTINCTIVE OF ALL JAPANESE CANCELLATIONS USED ON UNITED STATES STAMPS.

This inter-consular usage from Nagasaki to Yokohama should not be confused with Pignatel & Co. covers originating in Yokohama and Hiogo, which we believe are more common (an example from Yokohama realized $3,500 hammer in our Sale 855, lot 19). The distinctive "X" in Box woodblock cancel on this cover is enormously rare, in fact, we have been unable to locate another example in reference books or major past sales of U.S.P.O.'s in Japan. This cover was carried by the Pacific Mail Steamship Co.'s Golden Age.

131 c image7c Vermilion (149). EXTREMELY FINE. THIS SPECTACULAR 7-CENT 1870 NATIONAL COVER IS WIDELY REGARDED AS ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL BANK NOTE ISSUE USAGES.

This is the only recorded 7c Bank Note cover with the scarce Goff-Hursy patented machine cancel with Shield design.

Ex Braus, Kaplan and Albert. With 1991 P.F. certificate ("genuine usage") (Image)

E. 5,000-7,500 13,000.00
132 c image7c Vermilion (149). Used with 6c Dull Pink (159), both have vibrant colors and choice centering, tied by halved cork cancels, bold "Springfield Mass. Feb. 18" double-circle datestamp on American Social Sciences Association corner card cover to Paris, France, red "New York * Paid * Feb. 20" transit and blue "Etats-Unis Paq. Fr. 2 Brest 2 * 4 Mars 75" octagonal French receiving datestamp, red "PD" also ties 6c, redirected with address on back, transit backstamps, backflap removed and small tears at top, otherwise Very Fine, a colorful and seldom-seen 6c and 7c combination because 13c rates are unusual in the Bank Note period -- in this case, there was no 13c rate to France (correct rate was 9c at this time) -- ex Braus and Klein (Image) E. 400-500 375.00
133 c image12c Dull Violet (151).
