Oct. 4" credit datestamp, Lima receiving backstamp, neatly
docketedVERY FINE. THIS SPECTACULAR COVER IS THE ONLY RECORDED COMBINATION OF THE 24-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL AND 6-CENT AND 12-CENT 1870 BANK NOTE ISSUES. ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND FINEST OF ALL HIGH-DENOMINATION 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE COVERS. This cover comes from the famous Davis correspondence, also known as the "Portchester Find", a remarkable group of 1869 Pictorial covers to Lima, Peru. It was featured in the 1961 H. R. Harmer sale of Davis covers and acquired by Dr. Martin in our 1986 Rarites of the World sale (realized $14,000 hammer). The franking and "3" crayon mark correspond to the triple 22c rate to Peru via American and British Packet. The correct credit is 12c per 22c rate (36c total), but quite a few covers to Peru show incorrect credits, and the 24c credit on this cover was applied in error. The 1869 PRA census lists all known 24c 1869 covers, but only this cover combines the 24c 1869 with the 6c Lincoln and 12c Clay 1870 National Bank Note Issues. With 1960 P.F. and 1986 A.P.S. certificates (Image) |

The appropriate credit for a 15c treaty rate cover to France carried by HAPAG steamer was 3c, thus the 6c credit on this cover corresponds to the 30c double-rate franking.
