inter-treaty port rate (HK 8c)VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 10-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A COVER EVIDENTLY ORIGINATING IN JAPAN, ADDRESSED TO SHANGHAI, CHINA, AND FORWARDED TO CANTON VIA HONG KONG. This cover is accompanied by a three-page analysis by the late Calvet M. Hahn. According to Hahn, it was probably mailed from Yokohama, where the distinctive "X" chop cancel was applied. The cover travelled on a southbound Pacific Mail Steamship Co. branch line steamer to Shanghai. The U.S. 10c rate applied to inter-consular mail at this time (it was reduced to 6c on April 1, 1870). At the British Consulate in Shanghai, it was determined that the addressee's mail was to be forwarded to Canton, and the letter was reposted. Mail between Shanghai and Canton travelled via the British Post Office in Hong Kong, where the December 26, 1869, backstamp and manuscript "4" collect rate (4 pence, or HK 8c) were applied. Another cover originating in Yokohama with the same or similar "X" cancel will be found in Siegel Sale 869, lot 3111. (Image) |
