1867-68 Grilled Issue
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
94 c image3c Rose, A. Grill (79). Centering and perfs superior to typical 3c A Grill stamps, tied by cork and "Cairo Ill. Aug. 18" (1867) duplex datestamp on buff cover to Oakley La. with sender's routing "Via Natchez for Distrobution" [sic], Very Fine, ex Cole and Hill (Image) E. 750-1,000 750.00
95 c image3c Rose, Partially Erased C. Grill (83 var). Beautiful deep shade, prominent grill clearly showing the additional four vertical columns grill points at left, tied by quartered cork cancel, "Richmond Va. Nov. 21" (1867) circular datestamp on bright orange cover to New York City.

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PARTIALLY ERASED C GRILL VARIETY AND BELIEVED TO BE THE FINEST OF THE FEW KNOWN ON COVER.

In a few areas of the C Grill (Positions 99-100R, 89-90R, 79-80R, 68-69R and 1-2L, 11-12L, 21-22L and 31-32L), the points between grills were insufficiently planed away or erased when the A Grill was converted to the smaller C Grill. As a result, some of the stamps from the C Grill have grills measuring approximately 18 mm wide. These so-called Partially Erased C Grill stamps are very rare, and the cover offered here is regarded as the finest example of the few known on cover. It is also a very early use of the C Grill (EDU Nov. 16, 1867). The letter is written by a woman to a wealthy New York real estate developer, begging for money in a rather pathetic tone (yet she is articulate and includes a newspaper clipping about the addressee's major building projects in New York).

Ex Sheriff. With 1982 P.F. certificate. Scott footnote indicates $4,500.00 value for this variety on cover (Image)

E. 3,000-4,000 2,200.00

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE 1868 2-CENT D GRILL BLACK JACK COVER.

The 2c D Grill is the rarest of the regular-production 1867-68 Grilled Issues (excluding the 1867 trials and rarest Z Grills), followed in order of scarcity by the 3c Z Grill, the 2c and 3c D Grills, and the 12c Z Grill. Covers bearing the 2c D Grill are extremely rare.

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE LISTING COPY OF THE 1868 3-CENT F GRILL WITH POINTS UP. AN EXTREMELY RARE GRILLED ISSUE VARIETY.

Accompanied by correspondence between a former owner and Eugene Costales regarding the Scott listing for this variety, which appeared from 1942 to 1959, was then dropped in 1960 because Costales and Perry had never seen an example, and was immediately re-instated when the owner made this cover available for examination.

Original letters from Costales, Brookman and Hugh Clark included with 1974 P.F. certificate. Ex Sheriff. Listed but unpriced in Scott. (Image)
