10c Green, Ty. II (32).
Well-centered, slightly toned perf tips, used with 1861 10c Dark Green,
Type I (62B), dark shade, corner crease, small sealed tear at right,
tied by three strikes of "San Francisco Cal. Sep. 2, 1862" double-circle
datestamp and grid on red and blue Flag, Eagle, Shield and "E. Pluribus
Unum" Patriotic cover to New York City, "New York Post Office
Advertised, Oct. 4" oval datestamp struck over Eagle and
ShieldVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTRAORDINARY COVER COMBINING 10-CENT GREEN STAMPS OF TWO DIFFERENT ISSUES, INCLUDING THE SCARCE "FIRST DESIGN" OF 1861, WITH A SAN FRANCISCO PUBLISHER'S SCARCE PATRIOTIC DESIGN. By September 1862, the 1857 Issue had been demonetized and purged from most of the Federal postal system. However, as this cover demonstrates, the old issues were still used occassionally. In this case, the post offices in San Francisco and New York either missed the 10c 1857 (due to similar designs) or the cover was simply accepted as a single rate, rather than double 10c rate. 3c)VERY FINE COVER. A REMARKABLE CIVIL WAR FLAG-OF-TRUCE USAGE WITH UNITED STATES AND CONFEDERATE MIXED FRANKING TIED BY CONFEDERATE RAILROAD POSTMARK. Based on the franking and sender's notation, it appears that this cover was mailed with only the 10c stamp affixed and instructions to use the 5c enclosed (in addition to $5 currency) to buy a U.S. stamp. Somewhere between the origin of mailing and transmission by the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, the 3c 1861 stamp was affixed, then cancelled by the route agent. At Old Point Comfort (Fort Monroe), the cover entered the Federal postal system and was carried to Fort Delaware prison for delivery to the addressee. In common with other known covers in which money was enclosed, this was apparently carried by a special express. Ex Gallagher (Image) |
