"2/" (two shillings) due mark, red London receiving backstamp (Mar. 7), a
manuscript notation concerning the weight ("Over -1/2 but under
-3/4") has been erased from lower left, several spindle holesVERY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT TRANSATLANTIC USAGE OF A TRANSCONTINENTAL STAGECOACH COVER. VERY FEW ILLUSTRATED STAGECOACH COVERS ARE KNOWN TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES, AND EVEN FEWER HAVE STAMPS. At this time a 5c surcharge applied to the 24c treaty rate to England. The stamps on this cover overpaid the single rate by 1c, but in New York the letter was deemed to weigh over the -1/2 ounce limit and consequently the entire prepayment was ignored. The sender paid 48c (two shillings) on receipt, with 42c going back to the United States for ocean transit aboard the Inman Line's City of Baltimore, departing New York on February 23, 1861, arriving in Liverpool on March 6.
