1c 1851 Issue
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
2077 image1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Position 92R4, large to huge margins all around incl. sheet margin at bottom, bright color, neat strike of town datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia IMPERFORATE ISSUE.

Type Ia was furnished by only eighteen of the 1,000 plate positions that produced imperforate 1c 1851 stamps. Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).

2078 image1c Blue, Ty. Ic/Ia (6b/6). Vertical pair, Positions 83L4/93L4, top stamp Ty. Ic from Relief E, large margins to just in, deep rich color, clear strike of "Ann Arbor Mich. Jun. 21, 1858" circular datestamp, tiny thin speck at top not mentioned on accompanying certificate

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE VERTICAL PAIR OF THE TYPE Ic AND Ia IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT 1851 ISSUE. THIS COMBINATION CAN ONLY OCCUR IN THREE PLACES ON PLATE FOUR.

Plate 4 was brought into service at almost the same time that perforations were adopted, thus imperforate stamps from Plate 4 were only in use for a very short period of time. The 1858 yeardate on this pair indicates that it was used long after perforations were adopted.

This combination of types only occurs in vertical pairs in three places on the plate. The Scott Catalogue does not list this vertical combination of Type Ic (Relief E) and Type Ia (Relief F) -- value as two singles is (Image)

A FINE AND REMARKABLE STRIP OF THREE INCLUDING THE RARE TYPE Ia. ONLY 18 OF 20 POSITIONS ON THE BOTTOM ROW OF PLATE 4 PRODUCED THIS TYPE.

Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May, and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III, IIIa).
