VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE PATRIOTIC COVER TO AUSTRIA COMBINING THE 12-CENT STAMP FROM THE 1857 ISSUE WITH THE ONE-CENT AND 3-CENT STAMPS FROM THE 1861 ISSUE.

Only five covers in the Matthies sale of Angell covers bear a combination of stamps from the two issues.

This Magnus design in metallic bronze is extremely rare in any usage.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL "ANGELL" MAGNUS PATRIOTIC COVER USED TO AUSTRIA WITH THE 30-CENT 1861 ISSUE.

The 30c stamp overpays the 28c rate via Prussian Closed Mail. Only two Angell covers were offered in the Matthies sale bearing the 30c stamp. The other paid double the 15c rate to France.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE PATRIOTIC COVER TO AUSTRIA FROM THE ANGELL CORRESPONDENCE. ESPECIALLY RARE WITH THE 2-CENT BLACK JACK.

A review of the Angell covers offered in the Matthies sale reveals only two other covers with the 2c Black Jack. One is used with the 10c and 3c to make up the 15c rate to France. The other is a pair used with a pair of the 12c to make up the 28c Prussian Closed Mail rate to Austria.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE STRIP OF THREE OF THE 5-CENT 1862 RED BROWN ON A PATRIOTIC COVER TO AUSTRIA. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.

Very few patriotic covers are known franked with the 5c Red Brown. This is one of only two offered in the Matthies sale, and the only one to Austria. The much more common franking for this rate was a combination of the 12c and 3c stamps for the 15c rate.
