to Scott & Klamath Rivers. Bold strike of oval handstamp, "Yreka Cal.
Jan. 7" (1862) circular datestamp on cover to Cluses, France, red
"New York Paid 6 Mar. 1" credit datestamp, magenta ms. "Paid 15", red boxed
"P.D." handstamp, various 1862 transits, trivial edgewearVERY FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE WESTERN EXPRESS USAGE, CARRIED FROM THE MINES BY PRINDLE'S EXPRESS AND ADDRESSED TO FRANCE. According to the Nathan book, Charles W. Prindle operated this express from Yreka to the Scott and Klamath River Mines from 1860 to 1862. He connected with Wells, Fargo at Yreka, sharing an office with them there. The cover offered here entered the mails at Yreka, where 15c in cash was given to the post office, paying the rate to the destination in France. With 1994 P.F. certificate. (Image) |
